The Halifax City Local of the NSTU has a variety of committees that any Local member may serve on.
The New Member Committee is a recent addition to Halifax City Local. They will meet at least three times and will be establishing their role within the local. The goal is to seek ways to engage new members with the Halifax City Local NSTU. They will be responsible for organizing activites, seminar/workshops that may support this mandate. The committee advises the Local Executive regarding issues related to new members.
The Equity Committee meets at least three times per year or more as needed. The Chair is responsible for setting the agenda and reporting back to the local executive. This could include advocacy, keeping up to date on current practices and attitudes regarding diversity, equity and social justice in the global community, act as liaison with under-represented groups within Halifax City Local and seeking ways to encourage inclusion and particpation in the NSTU. The chair will also be the equity liason to the NSTU Provincial Equity Committee and will attend the provincial conference when offered.
The PA/PR Committee meets once per month either as a local committee or as a regional committee with Halifax County and Dartmouth PA/PR committee members. This committee is responsible for maintaining contact with local media. this comittee plays an important role in promoting teacher image through publicizing programs of local interest. The committee maintains an updated contact file of MLA's, Municipal Council Members, School Board members and other persons with an interst in public education. On occasion, this committee may place newspaper ads or television ads related to education.
The Social Committee meets approximately once every other month and as needed based on the events planned. Generally, this committee is responsible for planning the Teacher Appreciation Reception, 25 Year Dinner, Retiring Teacher' Banquet, and Reps/Committee Members Dinner. This committee also makes efforts throughtout the school year to plan other activities of interest to the membership such as family events, Sunday movies, etc. Any member with any social event suggestions is invited to bring them forward to the committee.
The Professional Development Committee is responsible for organizing activites, seminar/workshops for the Local, as well as the distribution of Local funds for Special Project Grants, and collecting applications for student bursaries and teacher International/National Conference Grants. These workshops include any training opportunites for school respresentatives. The committee advises the Local Executive regarding issues related to Professional Development. The VP of Professional Development sits as Chair and acts as liaison to the NSTU Professional Development Committee.
This committee provides information to School Representatives regarding contractual professional development opportunites such as conference grants, professional development grants, educational leave grants, teacher or school initiated In-Service and prepares criteria and selects successful applicants for scholarship and bursaries sponsored by the Local. This committee meets, on average, 3-4 times a year.
The Resolutions Committee meets approximately once a month until resolutions are submitted. Its mandate includes seeking input from the local membership for Regional and Provincial asking packages, promoting the rights and responsibilites of the membership, assisting with preparations for negotiations with the Board under the direction of the Local Executive and Provinical agreements, consulting with PD committee (conference grants, PD grants, educational leaves, in-service), planning and promoting improved working conditions, and disseminating information regarding Regional and Provincial negotiations and the ratification of tentative agreements.
The Finance Committee, chaired by the Local Treasurer, prepares a budget for approval at the Annual General Meeting, oversees the production of a financial report for review and consideration by the Local Executive and the Local Council if requested by the Local Treasurer or the Local Executive, and develops and revises the Guidelines for Local Expenditures including member expenses, gifts, and donations. This committee meets as issues arise according to the above responsiblities and is chaired by the local Treasurer. The local President and committee members who assist in reviewing documentation meet as needed.
The Nominating Committee meets on an as needed basis. The Chair is responsible for circulating notices of any upcoming elections (including Annual Council Delegates). Any election conducted during a Local meeting will be conducted by the nominating committee and the Chair of the committee will receive all nominations to available positions prior to elections. The Chair is also responsible for providing school respresentative with the results of elections in a timely manner. This committee is comprised of Halifax City Local Executive members.
